Prayer to Beauty

Pablo de Rokha

NEWborn, the WORLD is crying, oh! divinity of sleep, and you are maternally, maternally lulling the tiny BLOND idiot to sleep, with the blue problem of the final songs…

As the minute strikes you evolve, and you are eternal and IMMUTABLE; your attitude ascends to the ideal PULPIT of the stars and SANCTIFIES the donkey’s droppings, balances out the wonders, good and evil; and your feet, full of light, walk over the mineral sorrow of the nations showering with truths the millenary and vile, wandering voice “of the HUMAN animal.”

Religious commotion, tragic, Dionysian from the INNUMERABLE essence, spirit of the universe and bread of the AFFLICTED, bread of the AFFLICTED, beauty, root of God, —the quake of his enormous finger, the nocturnal DEAD light of his inexistent pupils—, woman who drove mad, with your caresses, the GREATEST of poets: Satan.

What is true is multiple and you ONE and MANY, MANY: your axioms are absolute before the futility of knowledge, you blossom beyond the truth and you constitute, sobbing, the TRUE emotion of the COSMOS.

Thirty ages ago, thirty ages ago, your excitement was trembling in the ELEMENTS of the universe. –YOU ARE prior to matter, —today, you illuminate the irremediable cocoon of ITS aftermath, ITS results, ITS conclusions: the automobile TO THE MOON, the pale locomotive daughter of gray metals, the coal and the distinguished and illustrious waters, the roving airplanes, and the dark multitudes, the dark multitudes, the dark, revolutionary multitudes stirring SOCIETY with its grandiloquent ideal.

Beauty, extension of THE INFINITE and useless THING, beauty, beauty, mother of KNOWLEDGE, colossal iris of waters and smoke, waters and smoke against a SUNSET, extraordinary like the BIRTH of a MAN… —What do you want with me, beauty, what do you want with me?.. … …
